High-voltage measurement with a familiar meter

Measuring kilovolt-level DC should not require a dedicated high-voltage meter for every workstation. MeterMate scales the applied voltage to a low-voltage signal that can be read by a compatible digital multimeter with 10 MOhm input impedance. The conversion is intentionally simple:

Multiply the meter reading in volts by 10,000 to obtain the measured voltage in volts. The sign displayed by the meter indicates the measured polarity.

10 kV at the probe = 1.000 V at the meter

Built for practical high-voltage work

±40 kV DC measurement range

Measure positive or negative DC voltages up to 40,000 V for power-supply setup, equipment troubleshooting, and system verification.

10,000:1 divider ratio

The precision 500 MOhm divider network converts high voltage to a meter-friendly signal. Every 10 kV at the probe produces a nominal 1 V reading on a compatible 10 MOhm multimeter.

Extended insulated handle

The lightweight blue handle gives the operator reach while helping maintain separation from the energized test point.

Protective guard disc

The oversized semitransparent guard provides a clear hand-position boundary and helps reduce the risk of surface tracking toward the handle during proper use.

Spherical contact electrode

The polished aluminum sphere distributes the electric field more evenly than a sharp point. It provides a smooth contact surface for measurement and can support controlled discharge procedures when used as directed.

Direct DMM connection

Red and black safety banana leads connect to a handheld or benchtop digital multimeter. A separate green lead provides the required earth-ground connection.

One tool, three essential checks

Measure

Check the output of high-voltage power supplies and energized systems up to ±40 kV DC using a compatible 10 MOhm digital multimeter.

Discharge

Use the spherical electrode as part of the prescribed grounding and discharge procedure to remove residual charge before handling or servicing equipment.

Verify

Measure again after shutdown and discharge to confirm that the voltage has fallen to a safe level before work begins.

Important: Never assume that a system is de-energized because it has been switched off. High-voltage capacitors and cables can retain hazardous charge. Always discharge using an appropriate procedure, then verify by measurement.

Research applications

Included system components

Product-image note: The digital multimeter shown in product photography is representative. The included brand, model, color, and appearance may change based on availability. The supplied meter will meet MeterMate's stated compatibility requirements.

Multimeter compatibility

MeterMate includes a compatible digital multimeter. If using another meter, the following are required for the stated 10,000:1 scaling and accuracy:

The multimeter remains at low potential; it does not need a 40 kV input rating. The probe, leads, grounding, work area, and operating procedure must nevertheless be suitable for the high-voltage source being tested.

Basic connection sequence

  1. De-energize the high-voltage source and follow the equipment manufacturer's lockout and discharge procedure.
  2. Inspect the probe, guard, electrode, cables, insulation, and connectors. Do not use damaged, contaminated, or wet equipment.
  3. Connect the green lead to a verified earth-ground point.
  4. Connect the red and black banana leads to the appropriate voltage and common inputs of a compatible 10 MOhm digital multimeter.
  5. Select an appropriate DC-voltage range and confirm the meter setup before energizing the source.
  6. Keep hands behind the guard disc and maintain appropriate clearances from all energized conductors.
  7. Contact the intended test point with the spherical electrode and read the meter.
  8. Multiply the displayed voltage by 10,000 to obtain the high-voltage value.
  9. After the source is switched off, follow the prescribed discharge procedure and measure again to verify the remaining voltage.

This overview does not replace the product manual, the source-equipment instructions, or your organization's high-voltage safety procedures.

Can MeterMate measure both positive and negative voltage?

Yes. MeterMate measures DC voltage from −40 kV to +40 kV. A compatible digital multimeter displays the polarity sign.

How do I convert the multimeter reading?

Multiply the displayed voltage by 10,000. For example, a reading of 2.500 V corresponds to 25,000 V, or 25.0 kV, at the probe.

Will it work with any digital multimeter?

Use a meter with 10 MOhm input impedance on the selected DC-voltage range. A different input impedance can change the divider ratio and measurement accuracy.

Can it measure AC or pulsed voltage?

The published rating is for DC voltage only. Frequency response, pulse behavior, and transient peak capability are not specified; do not use MeterMate for those signals without written application approval from Spruce Science.

Can I use the probe to discharge a capacitor?

The spherical electrode can support controlled discharge procedures, but suitability depends on voltage, capacitance, stored energy, repetition rate, and the required discharge time. Confirm the procedure and energy limits before use, and always verify the remaining voltage afterward.

Safety information: High voltage can cause severe injury, death, fire, and equipment damage. MeterMate is intended for trained personnel familiar with high-voltage measurement and discharge practices.

Add high-voltage capability to your measurement bench

MeterMate turns a compatible everyday digital multimeter into a practical tool for measuring, discharging, and verifying high-voltage DC systems—without the cost and bench space of a dedicated high-voltage meter.

Specifications are subject to change as the product is improved. Confirm requirements for your application with Spruce Science before ordering.
